First Flight

Posted on April 4, 2016 at 12:00pm 5 Comments

Special Thanks to Doug Dugger for performing the First Flight on my 701 this last Friday.  He and Steve Smith flew down to my cow pasture runway to perform the first flight.  All Went perfectly.  What a joy to see five years of work go airborne.

Streamlined Struts

Posted on October 15, 2013 at 5:05pm 6 Comments

I've spent a considerable amount of time researching streamlined strut covers to reduce drag, better performance.  I've found that uflyit.com sells two sizes.  The smaller size fits our (701) struts, but are very difficult to slide on unless you use some form of lube.  I used silicone, and they went on very nicely as opposed to doing one with no lube (very hard), and baby powder on one (no difference).  They look good and are secure.  you can change the angle of attack fairly easily.  The…

Hi Roger,

Actually I do ! I never installed the round 4130 wing struts. Instead, I bought float streamlined struts and fitted them on. Maybe got a few mph added to the top speed of the 701 doing this...Still the 701 isn't a race plane !

Norm

Hi Roger, sorry I'm so slow responding, really been a rat race here the last few weeks. Your so close, I look forward to meeting you soon. Some day maybe we can fly our Stols somewhere together. Great having you as a neighbor.

Roger,

I got the cork spacers from 12" square cork sheet from Michaels store. I just used the

doubler ring to trace 3 pieces and glued them all together. The original plans called for the location of the senders on the top of the wing but with no access to them. I made access panels for maintenance and removal of the senders if necessary. Has worked very well and not affected flying characteristics.
