Backcountry Camping in the Rocky Mountains

Posted on May 27, 2018 at 5:00pm 12 Comments

This weekend Dave and I decided to check out a British Columbia Forestry airstrip in the East Kootenay area of the Rocky Mountains. The airstrip is known as Sage Creek as it is adjacent to the creek of the same name. We had only heard about it last year and apparently is rarely visited and the condition was said to unmaintained and one should be careful.

We departed our home airstrips after work on Friday evening with our camping gear. We decided to go direct “over the top” to maximize…

Rotax 912iS Sport Announced

Posted on April 2, 2014 at 2:26pm 3 Comments

Looks like there is a significant upgrade available for the 912iS. It is now called the 912iS Sport. A new airbox and software upgrade (plus a few other minor goodies) result in a higher torque curve. It looks like the parts are free for a limited time for those of us that already have the iS engine. Yay for Rotax! I'm pumped!…

Trip Report #1

Posted on August 19, 2012 at 8:00pm 8 Comments

I really like reading trip reports, so here is my first trip report of hopefully many more. I have flown many cross country trips before but they were in my Beaver RX550 ultralight. This trip was the first long(ish) flight that we have taken with our CH601XLB. It was almost a year ago that Dave, Glen and myself bought this 601 from Howard Parr. Howard lives in Regina,…

Hi jo     Ron Zielke here, just thought you would like to know that on nov. 28 I received my pink slip, that's the good news  the bad is it's been raining ever since, I think that it is to moderate and clear buy late mon/ of next week.  Tanks again for all your help[ on my mode to change my elevator horn bracket , not to shabby for an 85 yr/ old fart.

Good morning, Joe. We survived the crash box delivery; Seb & Co. were great. My build is coming along. I'm working on the wings. I decided to chromate the insides. The vehicle may live in Florida. The whole project moves forward in fits and starts for odd reasons. But I'm having fun. I hope you're enjoying yourself. -- rick

Hi Joe  just seen your aircraft on  Zenith site.  Man it really looks sharp, lot's of work though.  I'm moving mine to the airport next Tuesday.  we decided to paint it olive drab to kind-of look like the old l-4's,my sons suggestion,  but it does look nice.

 Hi Joe

Yes that was me over Vulcan this morning, that is pretty much the end of my 25 mile test area. I finished today's flight with 18 hours on it with no major snags. If the weather holds I should have my 25 hours flown off next week end then I will be free to make some longer flights and land at some different airports.

Cheers,

Vance

Hi Joe its Kelvin from Australia met you at Oshkosh 2016 just wondering how your Engine is going and if any problems with your gearbox. Just about to install 912is sport but have seen local flying school with gearbox premature wear not sure if pilot management is the problem. how many hours on yours now? And your buddies planes as well how are they proforming?

Hi joe  Thanks for the up date I'm really pleased for you and how well your mod is working out.  I knew that what we had devised would have to be better than what zenith had come up with, and by know mean am knocking zen but I'll bet it won't be long before they quietly change that system.  I certainly wish I to were flying my 40 off, I'm just know am wiring my plane and am hoping to move it to the local airport in August late, and fly by 1st or second week in September.  My birthday is on the 8th that would be the best present ever.

Thanks Joe
I finally mounted my motor and had a concrete block for extra weight and then adjusted the rod and cut off the excess then I got on the prop end and bounced up and down and it would just barely hit the motor mount.  Before I fly I'm going to just do away with it.  Thanks again Joe

Hi Joe   Did you ever figure out a solution for the center pin in the Viking spring replacement and how it hits the motor mount?  I remember you were trying something with a cable.
