Flying In Alaska... On floats and skis

Big Lake is 65 miles toward Mount McKinley (Denali National Park) from Anchorage and Johnson Creek is about 80 miles closer to Mt. McKinley.

My plane was built from a kit purchased from the Zenith Aircraft factory in Mexico, Missouri.
From start to finish it took me over 1,000 hours, but I spent a lot of extra time on the construction of skis, a custom baggage door, a survival gear box under dash, ejectable top hinged bowed doors, and more. I also installed larger wing tanks (which are now standard in the kit) and built both wings with one broken arm (and some additional help). This is a "EAA Centennial Homebuilt" and after a 1-1/2 hour FAA Inspection, it passed without a change.
I'm flying every chance I get and now have more than 100 hours on the plane in 10 months. It's on Zenair 1150 floats in the summer and skis in the winter.
I custom-built the skis from plans with UHMW bottoms, reinforcements and heavier axles and rigging.
Part of the construction time was from working with ROTAX Austria to get approval to slightly modify the tuned air intake, to fit on the 701, and I believe it was the first 100-hp. Rotax 912S to use it.

The plane flies unbelievably well. The shortest take off on skis, with no wind, pilot only, was 25 feet. The slowest landing I've made on floats was 28 miles per hour, the shortest landing and take off (at gross) on floats, was 400 feet. The plane will land itself, skis, floats, wheels, it doesn't make any difference.

Bob, There is a video on the Zenith website doing what you said about the front wheel. Thats what changed my mind about the 701. I will save the tailwheel for when I build a Pietenpol some day. But for now I need and aircraft that can be built in a 400 to 700 hours, can sit outside and can takeoff and land in a cow pasture without being damaged while being easy to fly. Also, If need be I can add floats and use the Ohio river for a runway. The CH701 was designed to be a nose wheel aircraft unlike a J-3 cub or Pietenpol which where designed to be taildraggers and fly will as taildraggers. Those airplanes would not fly well as nose wheel aircraft.

Hi Bob,

What engine are you using in your ch701. Does Zenith still sell the planes for the skies.

I'll check the website.

Hey Bob, do you think you can tell me where you got your skis for your 701 from? I've been looking and havn't found any, and if you built them from scratch would you be able to give me some design patterns if possible? thanks,

Brody

Hi Bob
The angle of incidence on these floats is 4.5 degrees with floats level.

ATTENTION BUILDERS ! I now have a new 701 kit, and will start the build in the fall, I ordered my new plane with the "old style" 5.5 gallon tanks to use as auxillaries, Zenith as always accommodated and remade the tanks. It would be to any builders advantage ,to do this . It gives you almost 2.5 hrs. of added fuel , and by design [ ie. against and parallel to the strut] almost on the CG. ,so no weight shift, the aux. tanks can feed the mains and therefore do not need fuel gages, sure beats gas cans for the long occasional flight ..BOB

Hello Bob,

Thank you for your prompt response. :o)

I have already purchased the VG's for the elevator, and I am very impressed with your water take off's not to mention the flight attitude of your 701 in the recent video on skies.

I also agree with your comment about the fences looking really cool, and was wondering if you happen to have any close up's of the fences, and the method you used to install the horizontal stabilizers on the tail. If you do, would you please send them to me off forum at the following address

robert.pelland@cgocable.ca

Thank you for the time you will take to address my concerns.

You have my very best regards
Bob

Two things I would like to pass on to other builders, 1. put the key switch in the center of the dash , so you can operate it with your arm resting in the -y- stick. this helps with restart in flight , taxi on floats ,and ski's as nose can be held up with hand also on key to shut off when coming to the pier or shore ,while holding throttle with left hand. 2. DONT use a plastic fuel filter under the cowl, and wrap insulation adound the metal filter for fire protection , and vapor lock prevention ..VERY important...
