July flight over the Cascades

Posted on July 4, 2009 at 9:30am 2 Comments

Yesterday was a holiday for me, so I decided to take a quick loop to the north east of my home airport, Sanderson Field in Shelton WA. I topped off the tanks in my Zodiac 601 XL and warmed up my Jabiru 3300 as I taxied over to runway 23, two mouse clicks sent an email to family and friends telling them that I was taking, and letting them know that they could track my flight with a web based map. Knowing that some of them would follow my flight made it feel as though I was sharing this little… Continue

Wow, what beautiful surroundings. Imagine having all that in your back yard so to speak. One question about your flights seeing that your photos around the mountains are well over 14,000, do you have an O2 system in your 601? For some reason I thought that you needed an O2 system to go above 10K. I received my Light Sport certificate in November so I don't have a lot of time in the air yet. Not sure if I would worry about alternatives so far into the wilderness should something go wrong. Around here there are suitable alternative landing sites all over the place. Those mountains seem like they would be a tough place to make an emergency landing but obviously the reward is amazing! Perhaps it’s just a matter of perspective. All my experience is basically over flat farming land. Obviously the views are out of this world. Thank you so much for sharing.

I envy your flight to Glacier Park. I served in the USAF at Great Falls, MT and Glacier is among my best memories of the area. In fact I am planning a driving trip from Louisiana to spend a week hikinh the St. Mary and Swiftcurrent areas next July (too much anniversary hoopla this year).

Good to hear from you Alan. Pity we hadn't known of each other when you passed through Blenheim earlier this year - still you could always come back some time! Did you get to see our Aviation Heritage Centre (designed by movie director Peter Jackson and his crew)? http://www.omaka.org.nz/ Also we have a classic fighter's airshow here every other Easter - next one 2011. See you then??

What great shots! Fantastic country to be flying around - gives me all the more incentive to get my 701 in the air asap so I can do similar things around our mountains in New Zealand.
