I cut an overlay to fit over the original panel blank, the overlay provides some additional stiffness to the main panel while hiding the flush rivets used to attach the nut plates.  The removable top section is attached to the main panel using #10 screws and nut plates.  I chose to make this section removable for two reasons:  Easy access to most of the wiring for maintenance, and the top section can be removed and re-made to contain other avionics (upgrades) without the need to remove or disturb other aircraft systems (throttle, mixture, trim, flaps, etc).  We'll see if it works out!
