Hi everyone

really informative forum...I learning a lot going through all the posts..

Ive noticed on Vikings videos that flight testing has been done with no cowl

and other members mention having flown with no cowl...

i was was wondering what the fuel penalty is for not having a cowl on

does the plane handle much differently

if you get caught in the rain, is there any hazard to the engine

was thinking if flying with no cowl is no big deal(water cooled engines).....you could get into the air sooner and enjoy the plane...

do some flying while working on finishing touches...

thanks

Michael

We fly without a cowl often - especially when testing new things etc. this allows us to get more done. You will have more drag obviously as the air is hitting the firewall, but its a slow plane anyway....as long as all your wires are tied up correctly - there isn't an issue with it, not really a big deal if it rains, but obviously avoid it because it should be VFR for the most part anyway, you'll also find out that parts of the aircraft itself will leak..The fuel burn is incredibly low, your looking at such a little difference in the two, not even measurable or worth the time to calculate. Keep in mind thought, this is LIQUID cooled, not water cooled, and it is a slightly closed cooling system. -Alissa
