Tachometer wiring with Jabiru 3300 with Dynon EMS D120 and Rotec Alternator

Replaced the original Jabiru alternator with the Rotec 45 Amp unit, which required the removal of the original alternator and regulator. This removed the tach hookup wire from the original alternator. Anyone have any ideas as to the correct hookup for the tachometer with this swap/replacement?

Thanks,

One solution is to buy the Jabiru magnetic pickup that mounts next to the flywheel. I have one but have not installed it yet so I am interested in hearing from anyone who uses that tach sensor.

Thanks Richard.  I had no idea that this part existed.  I shall have to contact Jabiru to see if I can get one of these.

People at Rotec, in Australia, just sent me a memo that they think the Dynon can accept a tap into one of the magneto P leads to perform this function.  I'll check with Dynon and get their opinion.

Thanks again,

Dene

Hello Dene,

I am in the process of installing the Rotec alternator kit, but am puzzled by something. The Jabiru 3300 alternator has 2 ignition coils that provide power to the two distributors. They appear to work off of the magnetic ring in the Jabiru flywheel and ignition system. Once the Rotec alternator is installed there is no seeming way of sending current to the distributors and the Rotec alternator instructions say nothing about this. How did you handle this problem. Thanks!

Gene

Hello Richard,

Did you install the Jab magnetic pickup yet? If so, did it function properly? Thanks!

Gene

Gene,

Bought the pickup and installed it, then called Dynon.  They had no guess if it would supply the required 12V necessary for it to run on the EMS D120.  Jabiru couldn't supply the necessary information either. So there you have it.  Nobody knows if it'll work or not and I didn't wish to take a chance on damaging the EMS.  I never did hook it up.  Alternative was to connect the P leads from the ignition switch to the appropriate connections on the EMS using a 50K ohm resistor on each lead.  Seems to work fairly well, though a bit unstable when doing a mag check, but otherwise all right.  I would love to hook up the mag pickup someday if only I could get some positive information from either Dynon or Jabiru.

Hi Gene,

The ignition coils on the 3300 are fixed to the engine and sense the magnetic pulses of the flywheel going around.  They are in no way connected to the original alternator system.  When you install the Rotec alternator, you remove the old system from the inside of the flywheel and, also, the wiring and voltage regulator from the system.  That removes the tachometer sensor and requires you go another route for tachometer information.

Leave the ignition system just as it is and you will be fine with that.  Installing the Rotec alternator is very easy and very, very worthwhile.  With the original system, you need approx 2000 RPM just to get any charge at all, while with the Rotec, even with all my electronics on I show charging above 800 RPM and battery is always fully charged well before reaching run up position.  A great addition.

Hi Dene:

Thanks for your reply. I now understand the operation of the coils.

Gene

Dene, my Dynon D180 came with an installation manual that give detailed wiring instructions for several methods of tachometer hook up.   I’m sure you can download a copy for the D120 from the Dynon website.  Might give you some additional ideas.
