I am almost ready for first engine start with a salvaged O-235 C2C. While doing pre-oiling the blanked vacuum pad started leaking oil. After pulling the blank I discovered a bad gasket.

So the question is:

Should I source a proper gasket?

Or is it acceptable to use high temp form a gasket instead?

I have been unable to find a definitive answer to this one.

Thanks, Matt Stecher

I’ll jump in first. Couldn’t cost much, order a new one and be done.

Your right, at the time of my original post I had not had any luck finding the part number for the gasket, but further searching turned up the parts catalog for the engine and its the #8313 that I need.

Thanks, Matt

I have torn down several engines that experienced rod bearing failures due to improper use of silicone form a gasket. Small amounts can extrude into the engine oil system and break free. They will pass through the oil suction strainer and block the oil passage in the crankshaft. Use the correct gasket and correct amount and type of gasket sealant.

Matt, listen to Samuel.  Use the correct Lycoming gasket.  If that doesn't work then find out why and fix it, but don't go using silicone, especially on a worn out gasket!  Please!

Don't treat your Lycoming like it's a dune buggy.  There is a wealth of proven history on these engines and it is well known what works and what doesn't.  Forget the prejudice about certified status.  These are good people that have developed these engines and the focus is strictly on keeping them safe.
