The XL canopy splits very easily. I've gone through 2. I'd be hesitant to put a used unit on my aircraft, for fear that the existing holes would not line up with my canopy location, and the process of adding still more holes would cause a split.
The things are expensive, but I'm not sure what the alternative really is.
