It appears the fuel tank is sitting on the lower skin, cushioned only by cork strips. Am I missing something here??? Thanks for any replies.

yes it is sitting on lower skin, but it is boxed in on 5 sides with the cork. when done right, it's a tight fit and locked in. some planes simply have a wet wing bay, same situation without the added benefit of a tank. it has worked well for 25+ years.

Reggie - I noticed that also when I was building my 701. So I attached some .062 thick "L" brackets ( wide and lined with cork) to the neighboring ribs and set the tanks on them and not the skin. Worked fine. Of course you will have to watch the height. My tanks are not Zenith tanks but close.

if you followed the plans, that would be correct. you layer the cork in stages as you rivet the skin on and make sure no metal on metal occurs. When I took my wing appart for the 601 mod, there was a little metal on metal where the weld line touched the skins. I placed additional cork and all was good.
