I am kit building a CH 650. While waiting for the wing mods, I have decided to work on the main gear (easily set aside when I get the mods). The 650 plans call for the main gear legs to be installed with the "flat" side toward the front. However, the Zenith demo plane and the HomeBuiltHELP demo plane show the gear legs installed in reverse. Is there a reason for this? Is this an old design? Are others doing this for some reason, or should I just follow the plans?

Hi Jim
If you have your C.G. correct the flat side goes foreward and takeoffs will be easier.

Hi Jim, with my Corvair and input I have received from others, I put the flat side forward. Other builders have remarked rotation was smoother with flat side forward and landings with the gear reversed resulted in a marked thump of the nosewheel. As Floyd says, it does depend on the weight of your engine choice.

Dave

Depends on your engine. Heavier egine (O-200) flat side forward. Lighter motor the other way.

I talked to Roger about this a couple of years ago after I noticed a switch. He said that it didn't matter. So, I set my Grove gear with the flat side back thinking that in my distorted reality it was more aerodynamic and it put the pivot point farther back while stepping up onto the airplane.
