Scary climb performance at max gross weight

I have had a great time working through my 40 hr Phase 1 testing. The performance of my Zenith CH750 STOL / Corvair 2.7 l is OK - not spectacular compared to my training in a C172 (but totally different plane). My Vy is right between 45 & 50 indicated - I rotate at 40 and climb out at 50 @ 500 fpm - good performance. My prop is a Warp Drive 2-Blade 68" ground adjustable that I set for a static rpm of 2850. Full power is close to 3000 rpm and I usually cruise at 2700. Cruise spped is right…See More

Carburetor Choices - Go With The TRIED & TRUE

I built my Corvair to WW specs but thought that an alternative carb was an attractive option. I test ran and flew with a Sonex Aeroinjector 35 initially, Like some I found it hard to tune and difficult to start in different weather conditions. My cable jammed on startup last week and quickly I was done with that crap. I installed a MA-3SPA carb the last couple days and I have never been HAPPIER! Today I flew with confidence - the new carb started perfectly, was responsive thru the whole range,…See More

Cleaning Tips & Tricks - from the "School of Hard Knocks"

I probably have tried just about every cleaning trick known to man and I think that I have come to "as good as it gets". When cleaning a 60 year old engine (I have disassembled and cleaned a half dozen Corvairs now) I think I have tried every soap, solvent and cleaner - always trying to find the easiest solution. WW recommends spending a couple hours with a pressure washer and your engine - NO FUN! It ALWAYS takes a little "armstrong" power but this is what I have found is the ultimate help:A…See More

EAA Amateur Built Certification Kit

For anyone just starting out or almost finished, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the EAA's Amateur Built Certification Kit. It has all the forms, all the steps and all the right language to make getting your paperwork done correctly very easy. It also has good recommendations on the timing to send the various forms in. SUPER helpful!See More

Rattle can airplane?

Is there a name for drilled out rivets / rivet studs / fasteners that end up trapped in inaccessible areas like wings / horizontal stabilizer / control surfaces and rattle around when you taxi?(I just started taxiing and discovered some rattles, would like to see the humorous side of this! Set The Wings!!!!

Thank you to the Kratochwill boys! Tom and Tyler from Merrimac came down this last weekend and helped me set my wings. Great help! With everything set, I powdercoated all the steel fittings and my dad and I did the install on Monday. Filled up the gas tanks and taxied that afternoon. A little anticlimactic that afternoon as we were beat. BEAT! The brakes could not hold…See More

Pulled Out Corvair Head Stud

Ever have that horrible sinking feeling in your stomach when you keep torquing a head stud and the torque never goes up? I have! I did a test run last month after I got my engine installed in the fusilage. Then I adjusted my carb, retorqued all the head studs, set the lifters with the engine running, reset the timing and changed the break-in oil / filter. On retorquing the head, the upper left stud on the number one cylinder pulled out - OH CRAP.I looked at an extra case that I have and found…See More

2nd Annual Engine Starting Party!

Last year on Labor Day I did the first run of my WW Corvair conversion engine on the engine test stand. We had a big crayfish boil and the engine started and ran beautifully - purred like a cat! This year we had a seafood boil again and started the engine again - this time in the fuselage. If I had the seats and brakes installed I could have driven it around town. It ran beautifully! (After I readjusted the timing and and got the whole procedure down)Thank you to the support of all my friends…See More

Engine Test Stand - Southern Wisconsin - Free

Anybody want to use or have my homemade engine test stand? I built it last fall for the break-in run of my Corvair. Made out of very stout oak 6"x6" timbers and oak 2x4's. Very heavy but fits nicely in the back of a small trailer.Plenty of clearance with a 66" warp drive prop. 15 deg. angle for Zenith firewall but could be changed. The same as pictured in my profile pic.See More
