UL Power 350i Starting Issue

I now have about 30hrs on my 350i engine.   On every engine start, I crank engine for about 5  to 8 seconds and nothing happens.  However, after I wait 15 seconds and crank it again it immediately  starts.  I have tried starting on different fuel tanks, different fuel pumps, different throttle positions and cranking engine for 15secs all of which have no effect on starting engine on first try.   I did talk to Ray at UL and he gave me some things to try but none of them had any effect on getting…See More

Viking Steel bungee with UL Power 350 series engine

When I built my 650, I installed the Viking steel bungee suspension.  The ground handling seems to be ok but in flight the rudder will not return to center.  I have adjusted the side straps and center rod every way I can think of but nothing seems to make the rudder stiffness any better.  The threads on the side straps are about 6mm from the top of the nuts.  The center rod has some tension on it.  I did not grind down my bottom block because I did not think that was needed.   Has anyone had…See More

Fuselage Kit Received

Posted on February 27, 2011 at 8:31pm 1 Comment

My 650 fuselage kit arrived Friday (2/25/11).  Got all parts inventoried only to find that I received all the firewall parts for the 750.  So I will be working with factory to get this corrected.  Over the weekend I did get fuselage bottom section ready for corrosion protection and rivets.  Should be able to get this done this week and can hopefully work on sides this weekend.

601XL Stabilizer

Posted on September 5, 2010 at 6:00pm 1 Comment

I have an existing 601XL stabilizer skeleton however I am starting a 650 project and just finished the rudder. I also have an existing 601 XL completed elevator. First question is can I use the new 650 skin for the existing 601XL stabilizer skeleton? Or can I complete the 601XL stabilizer skeleton with a new 601XL skin and use both the 601XL elevator and stabilizer along with the new 650 rudder for my new 650 project? Thanks.

Just Started 650

Just finished rudder. Starting on rest of tail kit. Looking forward to building process and many tips and assistance from experienced builders on this site. Don't be fooled by picture. I am now retired from USAFR and working as electrical engineer. Finally have time to get project underway.

Hi Larry,

I painted it myself first and looked pretty sad, blue similar to the red I have now.  I ended up with some cash so found a friend of a friend and WOW what a difference.  I am actually kind of proud of it now.

Tow bar, I bent up some 1/2 " conduit, riveted some flat pieces to it to hold it together and made some holes along the sides to slip over the axle nuts.  Not pretty but works sort of.

Hi Larry,

I went to pilot training at Williams AFB, AZ and was in class 76-07, we graduated in March of 1976.  I then went to KC-135s at Fairchild AFB, and flew T-38s in the ACE program there, and then went on to the E-3 AWACS to finish out 10 years.  I then got out and went to work for Alaska Airlines in Seattle and retired last year after 29 years with them.  I continued to fly KC-135s in the Air Force Reserve and retired in 1994.

 How about you?

Did you get this resolved?  If not, can you send me a screen-shot of what you are getting?

Larry, am building a 650 and I used to own a Cessna 182 and used auto-fuel and added marvel mystery oil to the auto-fuel.  Am putting an 0-320 e2a into my 650 and plan to use auto-fuel and av-gas when am can get auto-fuel.  The mystery oil helps the valve from stricking. 4ounce to each 10 gals of fuel.

Larry, my project is now on www.mykitlog.com/sunmanav8 in case you want to see my latest progress.  It will be a slow go as I do not have a lot of discretionary time left after work, family, yard work, golf, social activities, bla, bla, bla.

How is your kit build coming along?

Thanks for the feedback and encouragement Larry.  I hope to start making my first rudder parts over the Christmas / New Year holiday period.  Project will be on KitLog Pro soon.  I would entertain visiting you and your project but since that's a 4 hour drive it may have to wait until the plane is done :-).
