Have any 701 builders used the subaru engine ? I have one and the engine seems too heavy and will require lots of lead in the tail. The engine must weigh 200 lbs or more. A run down the runway and the nose will not lift. What is the max weight on the nose wheel that will work?

Hi Jerome, when i was researching engines for my 701, I ruled out subaru right away as it is to heavy as you are finding out. After looking at numerous engines I decided on the Rotax 912, plus you do not have to do any RD. If you go on 701 blog back to the very begining there is a blog about engine types, there is quite a bit of coments there.

At the first alternate engines page for CH 701, there are many pictures showing Subaru installation. Many worry about heavy engine weight. The picture above is of a flying Russian conversion that seems to operate off rough field alright.
Jerome - The 912 80 hp is a great choice, however, a little pricey. IF price is an absolute concern. Some VW installations have yield flyable success. If you decide to go that route I strongly recommend a prop gear reduction unit. On VWs it is very important you swing a long prop (70 - 72 inches) to get the performance you desire; now it won't be the performance you get with the Rotax but you can live with it. Be prepared for weight and cooling issues and perhaps additional money issues. But if you can the 912 80 hp.

I have a 701 with a Rotax 912S 100-hp, and it only weighs about 135 pounds. I can barely carry two 200 pound men (I am one of them) and enough gas to feel safe and I am at the 1,100 max gross weight. With a heavy engine, you have a single-place airplane.
