I'm planning to go to the Aircraft Spruce fly-in with the idea of maybe finding some "bargains." Among them is a handheld radio. I've read many, many articles and customer reviews, but I can't make up my mind which is best. Any opinions or technical comments?

ICOM A24

I had bad luck with a Narco HT870,     they are no longer available.

I'd make sure it has the accessory battery pack available that allows you to use AA batteries for when you're in the boonies and can't recharge the rechargeable battery. Also a removable antenna if you want to stick it in a smaller compartment in your plane. Has anyone ever used the VOR feature on their radio?

Good idea for a back up, I think a lot of us have had to use one as a back up at one time. I keep mine in my tray for easy access while in flight. Invaluable for landing in the backcountry and communicating and directing  others.

Don't know why you want a hand held?  Is it just for  a backup or as a walk around radio?   If so I would look into the Icom A-14 which is cheaper since it is only a com and not a nav / com.   If you are looking for a radio for the aircraft, checkout the Flightline 760.  Fits a 2 1/8" panel hole and has a built in intercom and only about 5 oz.
