I have been wondering about the placing/leveling of my remote magnetometer for my EFIS. It seems most builders have been using a digital level.

Has anyone tried using one of the cell phone apps that turns the phone into a level? What is intriguing to me is that most of the phone apps give measurements in both 'x' and 'y' axis.

Any thoughts or experiences would be of interest.

Thanks,Bill

The first time I read your reply I thought you had to be kidding. Girl Scout compass and level?

I was under the impression that this magnetometer was going to require surgical precision. (not to say that this thing can be slapped in)

Thank-you for helping me to relax with your story.

Bill

If you level the plane (or, I think, for the EFIS system you level the panel mounted EFIS gadget by adjusting the airframe's position such that the target part is level) first, you can use a plain old bubble level to level the magnetometer mount. The only advantage I see to the digital thingy is it can be set to compensate for the object not being already level. If your deck angle is 4.8 degrees you can set the level to read zero at a 4.8 angle. If the airframe is leveled you do not need that and any old leveling device will work to level your mount (even Brad's wife's cheap level in the glovebox compass).

I installed mine just using my cheap 10 year old digital level.  I set the level against the EFIS (D-180) rack in the panel, noted the 2 angles, then sat it in the magnetomter, and final adjusted with small shims under the bolts. Got it within 1degree easily.
