Hello fellow flyers.

I see many videos online of people landing there planes out in the deserts, on hill tops, river banks etc.

Is this legal?

Would we need prior permission from the land owner etc.?

Thanks

John

John,

Yes, we should get permission from property owns before landing. But it's hard to tell from any video if any particular landing is legal. For example here in Washing there is a designated place you can land on the beach of the ocean...

Hi Charlie,

Thanks for the reply.

I am in Southern Arizona with a lot of wide open space everywhere and would like to land out in the open desert.

Watch out for soft spots (e.g., burrowing critters just beneath the surface, just plain soft sand) and make low passes to spot irregularities like (including, but not limited to) tiny gullies with vertical sides that are almost invisible, especially in mid-day when there are no shadows. Dry lakes with zero vegetation preferred.

Hello Wayne,

Thank you for the wise and informative information. It will come in handy.

Here's three good sources for the info that you're looking for. The AZ Pilots has a great backcountry following, the Backcountry Pilots.org has great pilots with a wealth of info for pretty much anywhere you're looking for.

The RAF, Recreational Aviation Foundation, is another source, and a worthwhile organization to belong to and support, our main promoter in the backcountry flying world.

You would have to do research, for instance on BLM land you can land in some open ares and some you cannot, and some only on roads that off road or licensed vehicles are permitted, etc.

Walt,

Thanks for the great resources and wealth of information on the topic of off airport landing sites.

Regards,

John

I agree, what a great post, thanks for sharing that.
