Anybody install the optional 68k capacitor on the battery? Also, the UL manual says that extra protection circuits are not to be installed on the alternator but some have installed over voltage protection relay circuits. Can others enlighten me?

I was not convinced that I needed the capacitor and not 100% convinced that I installed it correctly, but I have115 hrs on

the engine with no issues (no issues after I installed the 13 row oil cooler).  The engine runs great, starts instantly every time

and so far, so good.

Thanks Robert. Where did you source the capacitor, Wicks?

What’s the little relay at the top of the firewall? I see you have an Earth x battery, just the one? Is there a difference in the wiring with the lithium?

Sorry for the rapid fire questions, just getting into the wiring now.

John, No, I didn’t wire the lithium battery any different than if I’d installed a lead acid.  Yes, I should install another battery, but most of my flying is local and I feel confident my warning lights (2) and Garmin G3x will give me enough warning to get the plane on the ground safely.  (hope I’m not wrong).  If I remember correctly, the relay was for the backup power if the master fails.

Most will probably say that two battery’s should be installed.  After flying with magneto’s for 40 years, it bothers me more to be flying with one ECU (FADEC) unit under the dash.  UL says they are dependable,

we can only hope!

When you say back up power, do you mean back up for the avionics.

Actually, I think I wired that for backup to the ECU.  I could be wrong, because I don’t remember exactly how I did that.  I will have to check the schematic next time I’m in the shop..  I flip a switch and check the auxiliary power to the engine every time I start it and I’m pretty sure I only wired it for that.  I should remember, but I don’t.

I’d be interested in seeing that set up. I have seen some discussion on having a switched hot wire back up to the battery for the ECU.

I’m into drawing my schematics too and am eager to see other set ups.

John

Get a chance to review your back up power scheme Robert? I’m focussed on ensuring the fuel pumps and ECU have a back up and there are a few ways to do that.

Oh, didn’t answer all your questions - I will look in my receipts tomorrow and see where I got the capacitor.  Thinking I found it on Amazon.

Even the specs of the one you got would help (voltage, make etc.).

Thanks much!

John, I purchased the capacitor from TEDSS.com and it is a Sprague 602D683F030 DF2D with screw terminals.  Service was good and they probably have any one you want.

I also looked and yes, the relay only activated emergency power to a power bus 2 on the engine control panel for the engine only. If you use a glass panel, I would install a separate backup battery just for that. Hopes this helps.  Building and mechanics are my stronger points, not wiring so not good at giving advice.

Good luck with your build.

Thanks Robert. Does it give the voltage? Not sure by the number.

Same as me, give me a wrench over a voltmeter!

You wouldn’t think it from the physical size, but it is supposed to be 12 volt.  You can get about any voltage you want.
