An interesting sequence of events….  A prop strike followed months later by a crash very close to the airport.  The details are not there in the write up,  but I would be curious to know if the prop strike led to a later mechanical failure.  Was this a mechanical failure at high power settings just after takeoff?  Curious minds want to know…..  looks like this aircraft had a Viking engine.

Jan & Allisa, can you school us up what needs to be inspected after a prop strike in a Viking, and if you are able to let us know if this engine had a prop strike inspection?

Yes, it had a prop strike inspection, and he replaced his radiator and a few other things. We have NEVER seen a prop strike lead to any mechanical failure, in fact we have had many have multiple prop strikes without issue. I also believe he had been flying for quite awhile after the prop strike. Heck we had a prop strike at Zenith this year and flew back home...

Speculation to cause could be anywhere or anything. It is highly unlikely it is caused by engine from what we have seen in the past. Likely, pilot error, fuel, wiring issues before anything (as in 99% of cases) We haven't had the opportunity to speak to Walter yet, and are just hoping he recovers as quickly and easily as possible. As we know nothing that has been done via pilot, condition or anything about the aircraft or engine condition it will have to be something that is investigated through the proper channels.

As I've stated in a few other places, as a reminder to get proper training, ensure proper maintenance is done and know that everything is mechanical and should always be treated as so.
