Jabiru 3300 7-week Storage Using Containers with Desiccant on a 601-XLB

All,

I have some open posts in the 601-XLB forum I will update / close once I finalize the maintenance, which I haven't done yet due to other priorities unfortunately.

I will be unable to fly for about 7 weeks so I had an idea to fill the tanks with gas and attach tubes to the exhaust and air-box intake with the other end of the tubes sealed into tupperware containers with desiccant in them. I also sealed I think the carb heat bypass outlet scat tube and oil air breather tube to prevent atmosphere entering that way. I closed the heater register in the cabin but didn't seal it. I did seal the cowling opening for the scat tube running into I think the heater muff. I think that covers all air entry into the engine. I ran out of time to de-cowl her yesterday to see if there are other opening for the carb heater, etc..

I thought this may be helpful to keep it more dry inside and hopefully not damage anything while doing this, but as with my ideas sometimes I can be wrong. I just wanted to pass this along for whatever it's worth and any feedback. I"ll be unable to get to the plane beginning tomorrow for 7 weeks, so if you think I should unseal her, please advise today.

This may be overkill for seven weeks, but future storage may be longer and I thought I might do this again.

Hope this helps, God bless,

Tim

p.s. I'm in Michigan, and we too have all kinds of rain this spring.

FWIW, for 7 weeks of storage I would place a small electric heater under the exit cowl. That will keep the engine plenty dry. We do that quite ofter here on the Texas coastal plains where high humidity is common, and my engine will stay bone dry this way. In the winter I keep the heater on all the time while the plane is in the hangar, even if I plan to fly 3 or 4 times a week.

Thanks Jimmy, that's great insight. I may have to look at getting a quality heater to do that next time, much easier. :-)

Tim
