So, drill four holes in a couple of hose clamps and secure the the oil tank neck to the firewall with the hose clamps. Sounds simple, no? Anyone ever try to drill a hole in a stainless steel hose clamp band? Aaargggh. The clamp laughs and mocks my pathetic drill bits,  Anyone have any suggestions?

New bits and lots of pressure (drill press)...

Sharp bit...short bursts...pressure

Stainless steel creates a lot heat, try to drill quickly, and hard. Not too much drill speed. If the drill sits and spins, without pressure, it will create a lot of heat. Not good.

Thanks gentlemen, several videos on YouTube but some information conflicts- surprise! I will try slow and steady on the drill press with lots of lube.

A Whitney punch works great for things like that. No.5 jr.

Use a punch or small nail to start the hole.

Good stuff, thanks, I’d never heard of a Whitney Punch!  I got the job done on the drill press using slow speed with a small sharp bit and some oil to make a pilot hole, then the final size on the press with more oil. I learned using a hand drill with no lube on the work bench is a waste of time when it comes to stainless steel.
