Hey there, I’m new to this forum and also to the Zenith 701  which I just purchased On amphibus Floats . It’s a 2008 with  the Rotax 912 ULS  have not flown it yet, just did a pre-purchased and  sending out the Dynons for rebuild and update .

I am a high time Pilot with very low time on floats and   no time with zenith 701 .  Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated before my first flight .

Don't forget about the wheels.

Thank you!

Hi Brandon.  Congratulations on new aircraft.   If you have never flown a 701 you are in for a treat!

As float plane drivers we are always cautious about amphibious floats but there are lots of aircraft flying safely with them.   With the dynon very simple to add gear warning system tied to aircraft speed and a visual back up really helps as well.

The big advantage with the amphibs is that you will be able to get experience with aircraft handling before you get wet.    Not sure if anyone does 701 float transition training but suggest scan membership and contact owners directly.      Easier than type certification as pilot only needs to have commercial float rating and does not need to be a CFI but check for your jurisdiction.    CFI obviously recommended for type rating or equivalent on wheeled 701.

I transitioned with a high time commercial bush pilot with LSA microlight experience.

As most landings with 701 are power on, quite similar to float landings that you are familiar with.

You can ditch the slats if equipped as obviously we do not do extreme AOA approaches or take offs with floats.   VGs are a nice addition.

Assuming you are running a 912 you have tons of power due to relative light weight of the A/C.

Have a great time, look forward to your reports.

Once you go floats you never go back!

Cheers Vic

 Hey Vic,

Thank you for the words of wisdom and I  look forward to getting into the 701 for whole  new experience, with the Dynons , (d100 & d120)  they’re going to the factory for repairs and new firm ware. Will they put the gear warning at that time or is it something I programme in? We do have slats and have VGs on the elevator . Again thank you Vic for you input!!
