I have read much on the forums regarding fuel line size, but have become even more confused after receiving fuel our fuel line in the mail.  Some members indicate that they use Aeroquip 601/AE701-6 as supply and return lines.  The tech data for this line says it is AN6, size 3/8".  This is what we ordered and installed in both wings.  At the time, we had not decided on an engine so we also used this aeroquip as return line.

After receiving the finishing kit, I could not help but notice that the Aeroquip has a much smaller I.D. than the rubber hose provide by Zenith.  Zenith hose is Parker 39706, which has a 3/8" I.D. (.375")   The Aerquips I.D. is actually 5/32" (.156").  That's a big difference, and much smaller than 3/8".

Had Zenith provided the Parker fuel hose with the fuel tanks and wings, I would have noticed the difference in I.D.'s earlier, and questioned sooner.

Will Aeroquip 601/AE701-6 provide sufficient flow of fuel to the engine?

 You would like to have sufficient tube dia to bring 50% more fuel to engine than needed for takeoff.

!/4" ID tube will flow 16 gal/hr at 3 psi,more than plenty for a Rotax 912. If you are using a return line, the return flow for a 912 is half that for fuel consumption so a 1/4" line is plenty again.

Bob, thanks for the information.  Perhaps my aeroquip will be fine after-all.  I'd sure like to hear from others who use Aeroquip 601-6 what their flow rate to the firewall is?

My mistake.  Aeroquip 601-6 I.D. is 11/32" (.3438"), not 5/32".  Still, much smaller than 3/8".

A 3/8" ID tube has 200% higher flow capacity than a 1/4" ID tube. Figure out what hp engine you will be using and determine the fuel flow for it, then work backward to size the tubing to match it with sufficient margins.

A 912S (100hp) will use 5 gal/hr cruise and 7 gph on WOT takeoff. I can't see you using an engine with much more hp on a Zenith product so any tube with greater than 1/4" ID would be acceptable.

I think you are fine. You are only talking about a 1/32nd (.0312) of an inch difference in diameter between 11/32 and 3/8, which is not a lot. On my Viking powered 601 I'm using #6 feed with a #4 (1/4 inch) returns and there a no issues at all at full power.
