Hi all, I really need some help.

I inheritted my 601 HDS TD kit from my grandfather after he passed.

He bought the kit in 1992, and I am very close to finishing the wings. After looking at the parts around the hanger, I have noticed a good deal of corrosion on the skins. The skins sat on top of each other for the better part of 20 years.

I would like to removed the corrosion on the parts, given the large number of parts that it's on, and to replace them would get very expensive very quickly. As I move the skins around, there are no cracks or other structural flaws in the metal. It just looks butt ugly.

Please help.

After some buffing, and other "home remedies", I got one piece to look like this. Before and after pictures

Hi Scott,

I had improperly stored the sheet aluminum for my plans built 750 and had the same issue as you. I have also decided to polish my airplane (as opposed to painting) which meant it was imperative that I could remove all traces of corrosion. I found that I could completed get the corrosion signature to dissapear by placing a maroon scotchbrite pad under an orbital sander (used my compound polisher) and buff out the area. I was polishing, so I used Nuvite F9 polish under the pad which seemed to speed up the process of removing the corrosion. My aluminum looked as bad as yours and one can't even see where the corrosion was in the polish job. Paul Sanders also had the same problem and he used a different method which worked for him. You might want to touch base with him. He posted some info on here: http://www.zenith.aero/forum/topics/cleaning-up-water-troubled-alum...

There is also some info on the polishing discussion thread (see page 4): http://www.zenith.aero/forum/topics/polishing-your-airplane-tell-us...

I hope this helps,

Joe
