Coolant hoses have burned through twice because the radiator on the ROTAX 912 ULS width makes the hoses very close to the exhaust pipes.

I need a guarantee fix that I can fly with a peaceful feeling knowing that the radiator/hoses won't shift over the 1/4-3/8 " space and burn through again.

I have ceramic coated the exhaust pipes to insulate the heat. I was told to put high temp hose oversize over the 1" black hose but that would also eat up space.

Really need an answer here to get back in the air.

ANYBODY ELSE OUT THERE HAVE THIS PROBLEM?

Sent an email with photos to Roger at Zenith. Hope to hear from him soon.

thanks Walt. I purchased 10 ss ties for the repair, should be delivered to the FBO at the hangar. Now back to work after rehab layoff...so, need to find time to get out to the airport and complete this project.

Slipped firesleeve over hoses and ss clamps and tied back with double vinyl ties.

Will replace Oil and Coolant soon.

Like to hear that mighty ROTAX ROAR soon.

Right bottom side look at fire sleeve and connections...

best I can do...hope this time it works...seems stable and good spacing, as good as it gets.

I figure as long as nothing ever touches it is ok.

Can't wait to finish and fire up for the first time.

If that doesn't work I don't know what will!!!  You have a nice air gap and heat protection.  I'm going to move mine when I change out my bad oil pressure sender, If the resistor doesn't fix it, have only 11.6 hours on it and Walt's didn't work from the factory. My hose with thermoseal 2000 degree protection supposively and exhaust wrap on the pipe only touches for about 1 inch but that might be too much, better to do it right once.  Thanks for the photos. You will love this little engine and the unbelievable 750.

Best Chris

Hi Ralph, is it an idea to slip a thermocouple in between the coolant tube and the silicone sleeve and monitor the temperature from the cockpit?

I think I would clamp a thin sheet of aluminum to the silicone sleeve, to reflect the radiant heat from the exhaust. Silicone has a rather high coefficient of absorption in the wavelength range that the exhaust is emitting.

Regards and wish you success!

So far so good! I believe this is the trick for the hoses being to close to the exhaust pipe (see my reply on July 12, 2014). Flew my 40 hours off and now looking for some real nice weather to fly out to visit Michigan from the air! The cottage on the beach at Grand Haven is one of the first destinations.
