Context:  Fixed pitch prop / fuel injected engine without any sort of boost / CH750

Necessary gauge or not?  Pro's or cons...let's hear 'em!

My list:  Pro - Another engine monitor indication, short and long term data for engine health monitoring,

Con - Potential intake manifold leak point for sensor, minimal additional weight and complexity.

I use the manifold pressure to set the throttle in both the RV4 and the CH750 (both fixed pitch)- it is much quicker that using RPM.

I have a 601XL-B with Corvair power. I use manifold pressure as my primary power indicating instrument.  22" descending, 18" in the pattern, 15" on initial final, etc. RPM changes too much with airspeed.

Thanks guys...been a while since I've flown piston stuff, but I recall thinking that MAP was useful for power setting in conjunction with RPM.  Guess I install the hose and sensor to give me MAP on the Dynon.

Cheers!

If you have a constant speed propeller you do use the manifold pressure and RPM together to manage the engine. With a fixed pitch prop you can make do with RPM (and most light aircraft do) but you get better, more stable and more consistent power management with Manifold Pressure, even with a fixed pitch prop. Most light planes don't have MP because not putting the extra guage in saves the manufacturer money and weight as they build the plane.

Thanks Bob...appreciate the insight.
