I have bought a 701 project in Stage one. It has a 63" 3-blade warpdrive. I engine seems to run smooth and strong and will reach 2750 with no problem. It climbs at only 100 FPM. If the length is the problem what do you suggest and whom would I contact for a fix.

At least 68" and probably 72" 2 blade wood prop such as Sensenich would be more suited. have an 80 hp Jabiru and it runs a 64"x 30" wood prop.

On another plane I have flown with 2 blade and 3 blade warpdrives the 2 blade gave better pull.

C85 is max rated 2575 RPM so for best climb you should have set your prop pitch for around 2500 on climbout, any more and its just freewheeling.

Should be a good engine for the 701 (apart from the weight limitations)

Ralph
thank you think i'm going to go with J2200 fwf thanks for you answer
Ralph, I am new to the discussion board and see that you have a 2200 Jab in your 701. Do you mind telling me how satisfied with it you are? I am deciding between the Rotax 912 and jab 2200, but wanted to find out the real story of how the Jabiru works. Joel Sansing
I'm with Ralph here, not a long enough prop for the rpm. Look up the props used on certified airplanes that have this engine and and are somewhat draggy ( well compared to the 701) they are 69 to 72 or so inches long ( given ground clearance). Your missing a lot of prop disc.

Hi Ralph,

You replied to my discussion in Sept 2009, my 701 w/c-85 only pulled 100fpm.  My plane is in Shelbyville finishing up the firewall forward with a new J-2200.  Can you tell me about the performance stats you are getting such as t/o run ,climb, cruise, gph etc and any quirks, any thing I should watch for. I'm picking it up just before Christmas. I would really appreciate any input you can give for flight planning thx  Dan.

Dan, you will never get the performance that 701 are famous for with a C-85… been there and done it. C-85 doesn’t have the torque required to overcome all that drag from the 701. I had a 3 blades Warpdrive 64” ground adjustable, adjusted to get most from the engine 2575 rpm, at gross I was getting 300 fpm and cruising 65 to 70 mph at 2400 rpm, also tried 2 blades propeller with not much better performance. I replaced the C-85 with a 912uls and performance is almost like night and day.
Luc
thank you for your help

Hi Luc back in Sept 2009 you sealed it for me.  I couldn't afford the rotax so I went with a J-2200 I pick it up just before Christmas.  The sentence that sold me; "you will never get the performance that the 701 is famous for with a C-85".  Thanks for the enlightenment I researched the heck out of the facts behind your reply and dumped the C-85 for the J2200 I'm confident I made the right decision. Between You and Ralph who also joined the discussion you two set me straight.  I now have a C-85 w/warpdrive for sale Thanks....Dan
