I was just curios.  I replace the 12 row oil cooler with a 24 row cooler, and it dropped my oil temp from 240 to less then 170 on a hot day.  My CHT's run around 290 at 75F and on a 90F day, reach 311 to 315F. I don't like to fly it that hot. It seems I have to do more head torquing and valve adjustments when I fly it hot. ( I only torque to 20ftLbs now ).  What did help on lowering my CHTs was to replace the rubber baffle seals on the lead edge of the fiberglass scoops with wide material.  I used a baffle rivet and trimmed the front edge to fit snug inside the top cowl air inlet openings.  It made the top cowl harder to get off and put on, but made a difference of about 10 degrees.

Don,

Actually the picture is in the comment section at the bottom.  There is also a picture of the mounting bracket.  Note that my 601 has the early cowling and the automotive oil cooler.

Don,

Look in this blog post for a picture with both the old and new cooler.

Thanks for the info on Deer Valley -however, since you are in the area, I'm not, they had a mid air collision there last week-believe it was in a practice are - out North somewhere - perhaps by a state road. That cooled me off on the area somewhat. As the NTSB results are customarily delayed, was insufficient radio contact of a theoretical importance? Did one A/C have an instructor & student? Are any forthcoming details yet available?

I have been considering retiring in New Mexico or Arizona-have been to Casa Grande for Copperstate-in that you are in the Glendale area, hangar availability per my search so far, no access. 2 yr. waiting list in Coolidge. Any input appreciated. See your photo. Is it safe, via carport-shade 601 photo. A close friend of mine-his 182 was locked, chained, stolen. We believe it was taken to Mexico-has long range tanks, sat outside like your 601. Looking for hangar space in next 6 mos. Advise please. Have 601XLB & another E.A.B.

Don...

I sent you a private message.  But, one option is cooling louvers that get installed into your cowling.  They create a negative pressure area and can dramatically increase airflow inside the cowling to cool CHT and oil temps.  Of course, your baffling and everything must be sealed tightly.  This won't fix the problem if there is an underlying issue with baffling, etc...but we have numbers from a lot of RVs that have been cooled 30-40 degrees on CHT and 15 or so on oil temps.  Also, we have data on some zenith aircraft that are also favorable.  The temp decreases are not as dramatic, as the speeds are less, but they are still very noticeable.

Go to www.aircraftspecialty.com for more info on our cooling louvers and other products!

Hi don
I have a 601hds i found that the duct on the cowl wasnt directly on the oil cooler we reshaped the cowl so the oil cooler has more direct flow and this seems to be helping
