Hello Doc,

It was a bit bumpy but not anything you would not expect out in the desert. I never approach terrain without checking the wind on the Dynon display first.

The video makes the gap look like a tight squeeze but there was plenty of room, about 2/10 of a mile wide. You can actually make a U-turn in a 601 XL in that amount of space.

It is true that catching a 701 is easy. I fly with 5% of flaps and throttled back to 2,100 RPM to avoid overrunning Doug’s 701 which was running close to wide open at 5,200 RPM. Doug was able to fly lower and was having more fun with the desert terrain that I was willing to have in my 601.

Was it sort of bumpy squeezing through that funnel? Looks like a prime location for vertical currents. The funny thing is you could have climbed over it or flown around it and still caught him out in the flats.

Doug Dugger thought he could lose me in his 701 by slipping through the notch in Saddleback Mountain in AZ. NOT!
