Welcome to the site!!! The 76a is an analogue transponder and it gets HOT. When it gets hot it can overheat and stop sending a signal (ask me how I know!) . Make sure it's got lot of cooling air and is not crowded by anything around it. As the tube in it gets older it will start to overheat faster. Replacing the tube is almost as expensive as replacing the unit. If I were putting another one in, I'd have a small cooling fan blowing on it. Besides that, it's not critical or used constantly so you can put it pretty much anywhere in the panel.
