Test flew after extending cowl lip more and adding baffle in front of #1. Temps are back up to 360 on #5. I'm not happy!

Gary,

Could you post some pictures of your VW and "eyebrows"?

Flew yesterday, without outside air temps around 70 and had number 5 down to 340-345, with all others below 300!  I added a piece of aluminum in front of #1 that wrapped up over the barrel and the whole thing covered up about 1" or the fins.  I had used t his piece before, to no avail, but perhaps the combination of that and adding a 3-4 inch extension to the cowl did the trick.  Adding the extension, alone did nothing.

I had the same issues with #5 running up to around 360F (180 to 185C) even using a Lycoming type cooling box rather than the fibreglass ducts. Ended up using a VW heater hose to run air directly from the intake to #5. Got it back to 330F doing it that way. Also made some "eyebrows" out of scrap 16 thou ali which I put at the top of the left intake, and bottom of the right intake - seemed to help with airflow into the cowl.

If you can persevere without damaging the engine, my CHTs all settled down to around 300F quite quickly after about 20 hours of running.

Good luck and don't dispair. You will get there.

You know not to trim thermocouple wires? They all need to be the same length to give accurate signals to the reading instrument. .

Ed,
This has to be the most frustrating part of building your own plane!! After so much work...why a brand new engine is SOOOO difficult to get working.
It doesn't bold well for builders wanting to install Jab 3300. The people with such temp issues outweighs the # of easy /successful installs using Jabiru. unless you're an exception....to the Jabiru rule !!!
You are a patient man and i sure hope you find resolve soon for your flying sake -:)
let's see if you will recommend that engine to other builders!! lol
But maybe once you have it working...you will probably love it.
It's all part of experimental aircraft building I guess...

Ian,

Yes, I checked the washer.  I may have to take the sensor and make the switch.  I haven't because the wires are short and it will be a hassle.  I reasoned that everyone else is having the problem with #5, so it must be the cylinder, not the sensor?

Hi Edward. Have you confirmed the CHT sensor washer in installed correctly and is indicating correctly. Swopping your coldest and hottest sensor over may give interesting results.
