So much more than what meets the eye with modern engines

A lot of fancy good aircraft engines for sure. What Viking brings to the table is what now is very popular in a lot of new cars. Small / light / direct injected / turbocharged / all liquid cooled / not complicated / no exhaust pipes / inexpensive / affordable and plentiful worldwide OEM parts supply / any car mechanic can work on / no specialized internal engine components, type of engine. If you are serious about looking for real progress in engine development, watch the Honda video below. It…See More

Engine monitoring of the Viking Engines

All Viking engines can interface with existing EFIS  systems.  HOWEVER, it is not desirable.  Reason behind this is that the outputs from the Viking engine ECU  are not all that is desired by the viewing pilot. The engine ECU likes to monitor engine temperature, crank shaft position, fuel pressure, camshaft position, manifold pressure, etc.  The pilot would like to know parameters such as oil pressure and gearbox temperature. Also, why use the valuable screen real-estate of  an expensive EFIS…See More

Viking engines direct from the Honda assembly line.

Viking specializes in the recycling of Honda car engines for aviation use. This shows last weeks deliveries of low mileage 2017 and 2018 Honda Fit engines. Pick one and reserve it as the basis of your aircraft engine by calling Alissa at 386-566-2616. This one has less than 7,000 miles.  …See More

Jan,

Has anyone put the 174 HP Viking Engine on the CH-640?

I'm considering building the CH-640.

Are there any 750 STOLs flying in in Alberta Canada with the Viking engine ? I would like to see one possibly go for a flight in it. I live in Stony Plain A.B. near Edmonton but could drive to see one PH # 780-963-9640 , Cell 780 984-5033 , email shlaww@xplornet.com.

Thanks for the vote of confidence.  Of course I haven't even seen my kit yet.  I pick it up on 01/19.   It will be like Christmas all over again ...

Only 3 areas of the 701 build give me any great concern only because I have little experience.  I've done wood & fabric A/C before.  I had a Fly Baby with 65 Franklin just about ready for cover when Hurricane Katrina took it (and just about everything I owned).  We never even found any pieces.  As I my condo was just across from the N.O. Yacht Club, we figure the Fly baby is somewhere in the middle of Lake Pontchatrain.  I did manage to complete a 28 Hp Hirth powered MiniMAX 1103 in 2009.

I'd never done any sheet metal work so I took the EAA SportAir workshop and followed by the rudder-build workshop at the Zenith Factory.  I then placed my order for the 701.

I'm a retired Industrial Engr. Prof. (shopfloor automation), but the wing-root compound curves look tough and the cabin area (doors & glass) as well.  I ordered the folding-wing option and so far the plans seem sketchy at best in that area.

Finally, my comment as to the Viking install.  I'm more than sold on the engine (deposit to get in the build queue will be sent later this month).  I don't believe the installation itself should be a problem, I'm just not an electricals guy and the panel itself is a bit worrysome, but I'm sure I'll work it out.  I do see that I have the installation services to fall back on.
