Anyone Relocate Your Oil Pressure Sender Off Engine?

I am currently on my 2nd VDO oil pressure sender.  The first one failed high several years and a few hundred hours ago.  My current sender just spiked for a few seconds high, but settled back down for the remainder of a flight this weekend.   So I figure I need to start planning on a replacement.  I went back in these ZenithAero and the Jabiru Australia support threads to review the various oil pressure discussions.  One that interested me was mention that Arion Aircraft was selling a sender…See More

Canopy Crack Repair Advice

Guys,I had a gust of wind blow my canopy down just as I was getting in my 601XL and the rear corner glanced off my shoulder.  The plexiglass cracked about 8" from the bottom edge extending vertically.  I don't have a pic, but in the attached .jpg I drew a representation (albeit on the opposite side) of what the crack looks like.  So far I have only stop drilled the end of the crack.  I would like to put a doubler inside the crack, but, as a compound curve, I am afraid of adding more stress to…See More

9th Annual Condition Inspection

Posted on April 3, 2017 at 11:45am 1 Comment

Hard to believe my 601XL is going on it's 9th year of service.  I have the condition inspection slated for April to get it done right at the beginning of good flying weather,  This will be my most expensive annual as the main tires are due for replacement.  With 830 landings on them, the tread is basically gone and I would expect threads to start showing soon.  The planned Saturday breakfast fly-out was a scratch due to weather, but the low cloud deck was just high enough at my airport to…

My 2011 Oshkosh Experience

Posted on August 2, 2011 at 1:30pm 8 Comments

What a week Oshkosh was this year!!  I arrived at Whitman Field on the Saturday afternoon preceding the start of Oshkosh 2011.  Since this was our big “Zenith’s To Oshkosh” year, there were already several Zenith aircraft in the three rows of homebuilt parking earmarked for our types.  I parked my 601XL between Andy Elliott’s 601XL TD and Al Beyer’s 601HDS.  For a few days Matt Archer’s 601XL was parked right behind me.  During the week, aircraft came and went, but at the height of the show,…

Sloshkosh 2010

Posted on August 2, 2010 at 2:30pm 8 Comments

I was told that this was the wettest July in well over 100 years for the Oshkosh, Wisconsin area. Fortunately almost none of it fell during the EAA Airventure 2010 event. Unfortunately, it drenched the grounds in the couple of weeks leading up to it. I heard reports and saw pictures of areas on the grounds that were under 2 feet of water just a day or two prior to opening day.…

Upgrade Complete, N554SG Flies!

Posted on March 24, 2010 at 6:53am 11 Comments

Well my 601XL upgrade is now complete. The post-upgrade test flight occurred yesterday, March 23, and things went great. The sun was going down so I went up for three quick touch and go’s. The first thing I noticed was no oil can popping noises any more. I only got to 100 MPH so it will be interesting to see if they are gone at high speed also. In my short flight I did not notice any changes…

Adventures In Riveting

Posted on January 7, 2010 at 11:30am 2 Comments

I had a few people ask me why I thought solid rivet bucking was easy. I have to admit that I was fortunate to be taught how to drive rivets in A&P school a fair number of years ago, but the skill could be easily picked up by anyone mechanically inclined. I had the opportunity to make many mistakes before getting it right. I have not riveted much since then so there was a little bit of refresher needed. If you have access to the EAA web site, there is a Tony Bingelis article about rivet… Continue

Hi Dave. I just aired the tire back up, and haven't had a problem since. I keep an eye on it, and have a spare inner tube on hand.

Hi David - It's getting closer and closer.  I'm looking forward to the day when I'll be able to park it at Oshkosh next to yours and the others....

You mentioned you met Dick Navratil.  He's a good friend of mine.  A bunch of us local guys up here have been building a Pietenpol in his hanger.

Hi Dave. You have a nice looking aircraft there!   I hope mine turns out 1/2 as nice as yours is!  I'm building a CH650 from kit.  I have her up on her landing gear.  The wings are done and so is all the "upgrades".  I'm going to be using a 2700cc Corvair for my power plant.  I'm at the point of doing the first engine run.  After that, all I have left to do is the nose bowl, cowling kit, canopy (I dread this part) and installing the instruments.  Hopefully if all goes well, my wife and I will be attending OSH in the near future!  I'll see you there I'm sure!

Dave,

fyi, I posted a pic that shows my solution to the "sticking throttle problem with dual throttles"   Very similar to Mac's solution, works smooth now...

Dave,

I enjoyed meeting you at Sporty's and looking forward to seeing you again at Oshkosh. The flight home was a bit choppy, but nothing significant. Typical light airplane bounce mostly. Did get a 15 mph boost in groundspeed with that westbound breeze. Took 1.3 going home, 1.6 to arrive. There is probably about .5 hours of taxi time in that 2.9 hours.

Safe flying and see you later,

Dennis Hutchinson

David,

Appreciate your comments on my panel.  Was just looking at your write-up from Oct.15,2008 on Matronics re: Dual throttle and things you did to make it smoother.

Have been trying to ease up the "resistance" in the throt. controls for couple days now.

Have tried a number of the items to refer to, but still not happy with the friction.

Thanks again,

Mike
