Hi Alan. I have scratch built a 701 and currently live in NE Victoria, Yackandandah. I am moving to Townsville in January 2013. Love to have a chat. I have about 130 hours on my 701. I am about to bring it home to make some minor modifications.
All the best
Gordon Watkin.

Hi Alan,

No, I haven't done the beanie mod. I am scratch building a 750 and decided it didn't really need it because the windshield/roof junction is fairly gradual. Now Zenith have done their own beanie mod to the Edition 3 CH750. I might incorporate their changes.

My idea was instead of forming an aluminum sheet rib like in the wings (as per Joe Spencer's mod), I would use some half inch aluminum tubing and bend it to a rib profile and place it in the middle of the cabin roof and rivet it to the lexan. This would provide some additional stiffness. The tubing that I am talking about is the type often used as wing rib battens used in ultralight aircraft. I have some from an ultralight that I had that received damage to the wings. I am not sure this would work well; just an idea that I had.

Regards,

Joe

Hi Alan
I will take some specific photos for you toomorow but what I have done is to use the Jabiru fibreglass elbow and a piece of scat hose. I am not happy with the setup and will replace it with a Donaldson air filter rubber hose or similar. Many have done this and some have added an aluminium vane inside to straighten the air with RPM results. Jabiru are working on something very similar at the moment so keep an eye on their website.

I hope this helps and I will get those photos for you but also check out this members photo. http://www.zenith.aero/photo/2606393:Photo:66366?context=user

HI alan, sorry, I am very slack at keeping in contact! How is your project progressing? Did you eventually get your parts from Zenair Australia? I also had big trouble getting the wheels to hold air, I eventually ended up putting a bead of sikaflex round the wheel halves before joining them and physically pressed the o'ring down into the extruded stuff around the joint. that seems to have worked, at least for the first time ever the tyres haven't gone flat in a week! Right now I'm trying to figure out what size the slots in the fuselage need to be? plus and minus 13 degrees for the aileron and then an extra 15 degrees down for the flap? have you reached that stage yet?

Alan,
My personal opinion is that with a new 4340 crankshaft the 701 shouldn't need a 5th bearing. That's way I am developing the New crankshafts. this will greatly simplify the installation as well as keep the cost and weigh in check.
Of course my Opinions are Heavily Biased :)
Cheers!

Alan,
Have you looked into the Corvair?
I know there are several going on down there.
If you are interested I could put you in touch with a few.
Same power as the Jabiru...
Soon to be the same weight and nearly half the cost.
Just curious?
