Using Jira for Managing My Aircraft Build

One of the problems I have run into in the course of this project is being able get an idea of how much

is left for me to do on my plane and what needs to be done next.I have various notes and spreadsheets scattered around, but nothing has ever seemed to really pull everything together for me into a coherent whole.

In my day job as a programmer I use a project management software package called Jira. I have found Jira to be a pretty flexible software package, so I decided to see if I could use it for helping me manage my airplane build.

I have only been trying this for a couple of weeks, but I think using this will help me better plan my build tasks and  time. In addition I am creating a log of my build which is something that tends to get neglected. At this point I have created 39 Jira tickets for various things I need to do. At my current rate that is equivalent to about 9 months of weekends at my current rate(or velocity in Agile speak). There is plenty left to add as I identify tasks that need to be done.

The nice thing about Jira is that a 10 user copy is only $10. One potential downside is it is could be a bit of a challenge to setup if you are not familiar with doing things like setting up servers or installing databases. However Jira does have an option for a ready to use cloud based install.

The picture below is of my sprint board. For those familar with Agile development, I am not really using it for trying to commit to a schedule. I am using it to help me decide in what order I want to do things. If the text is a little hard to read, try clicking on the picture and it should pop up a little bigger version that can be seen.

This is all still a work in progress in trying to figure how to apply this to building an airplane, but the results seem promising enough that I decided I would share this with others that might want to give it a try.

If you want to learn more about Jira you can go to https://www.atlassian.com/software/jira

I am not associated with the maker of Jira, Atlassian  or paid by them. I am just sharing some experiments I am doing  that others may find useful.
