New STOL CH 750 features introduced at Sun'n Fun

Bigger and Better Zenith STOL:

We've made the popular Zenith STOL CH 750 light sport utility kit aircraft even bigger and better!

The STOL CH 750 cabin, which by all measures is already very roomy for a light aircraft, has been increased in size by raising the cabin height by nearly three inches (or 70 mm.)

The top front of the cabin (the ceiling) has been raised and is now part of the lifting surface of the aircraft (further adding to the STOL capability of the aircraft):

Here's a side view approximation depicting the curved top "sky light" window

The cabin frame's top diagonal cross member has been replaced by two beefy smaller diagonal "hand-holds" by the front of the cabin, and the formed plexiglass top window adds to the lifting surfaces of the aircraft, to provide better STOL performance and capability.

Here's a walk-around video clip of the new bigger STOL CH 750 cabin:

The larger cabin is the latest development in the Chris Heintz STOL design program which has a long history of innovation in the development of a light sport utility aircraft (or "sky jeep" as they are often called by their owners). With the taller cabin with airfoil top, the STOL CH 750 design continues to offer an "above-cab" wing design to maximize visibility:

The Zenith STOL line of aircraft was first introduced as a single model in 1986, the STOL CH 701.

That mod was done by a 701 owner before. This is not new. Certainly new as a  Zenith Option for $.

That mod was covered in a zenith news letter about a 701 builder that created and implemented the mod.

Just can't remember the builder's name  -:)

Too busy to answer....  Hmmmmm.  Let me think about this.  If you put a post like this on an internet site populated by current builders and owners of this aircraft, what would be the most likely first question they would ask?  Now lemme think.....  I've got it!!!  It's quite obvious.  They would of course ask, "Can I add this to my plane?"

They shouldn't be too busy to answer that question.  They should have anticipated it from the very beginning.  It could very well be that they have anticipated it, but are still trying to iron out the details of a retrofit kit.  I tend to doubt the theory that they're too busy to answer.  Having not already anticipated that question would mean that all of their thoughts were on new sales, with little concern for current and former builders.  That doesn't sound like the Zenith I know.  I prefer to think they are still ironing out the details of how to provide a retrofit, before announcing it's availability.  Either that or the answer is just a simple "no", in which case some builder will just figure out how to do it himself.

It just keeps getting better,

Interesting, I often  considered this mod for my 701 due to the lack of headroom.  Is it easily retrofittable to a finished airplane?

I'm guessing at minimum to upgrade from edition two you'd need a new cabin frame, windshield, skylight and some aluminum trim for the top of the doors. Don't think the doors have changed. It would be super sweet but probably cost around 2k to upgrade! :(

I suspect they are too busy with the show to answer but it will be interesting to see how it will work out for everyone at different stages of the build

Sebastion, Come on now you've throughly enticed me! I'm currently building a 750, when will an option upgrade kit be available?

Comment by Geoff Klestadt on March 28, 2012 at 7:04pm

My kit was shipped about Six weeks ago and is due to arrive in Australia next week. Will the necessary new parts for the modification be available as an upgrade kit?

I got edition 2 plans about 3 weeks ago, are these improvements included?

Now, Marj Simpson can ride with you.

Looks great! Glad to see the continual maturation of the design.
