Thought I'd update some performance stats for N601BD to actual experience from a few recent flights of 2 hours or more:

Range: 518 Statute Miles

Endurance: 4.3 hours

Rate of Climb: 1000ft/min.

Fuel Consumption: 8.5 gph full throttle on climb out - 8 gph full throttle in cruise and 5.2 gph/@ 2650 rpm cruise

How does this compare with all y'all's experience so far?

Just for fun here is some data with a bit more science behind it. My table PC collects flight data about once per second as I fly. I took the first 6 months of flight data for 2009 and did some analysis on it.

I filtered out all data where rate of climb was greater than +49 or less than -49 feet per minute. This leaves us with “level” flight.

Next I filtered out RPM values less than 2,250 or greater than 2,850 which gives flight with reasonable throttle settings.

Next I filtered out flight altitudes less than 1,500 or greater then 4,500. The goal here was to select altitudes where most light sport pilots seem to fly.

Next I grouped the data using the following RPM ranges and then averaged the data within each group.

2,250 – 2,349
2,350 – 2,449
2,450 – 2,559
2,550 – 2,659
2,650 – 2,759
2,750 – 2,859

The resulting average for these RPM ranges is presented below.

The averaged data points in the columns are:

Average rpm in the rpm range
Average altitude
Average indicated air speed (mph)
Average gps over-the-ground speed (mph)
Average fuel consumption in gph
Average vertical speed (to confirm data is for level flight)
Number of hours flown in this rpm band (allows us to note “thin data”, if any)
Average mpg over the ground

Now keep in mind that analyzing data is a bit like pealing an onion. There always seems to be another layer of analysis that can be done, like: What was the temperature? Was there a passenger on board? What prop pitch? Etc.

I have 2 fifteen gal. tanks, Jabiru 3300, and ground adjustable Sensenich carbon prop...same as Steve's. I have my prop set for cruise. I usually climb out at 80 knots...a little high, but at 1000ft/m climb I can see over the nose while near the airport. The climb rpm are 2850. It takes 3 minutes to get to top of climb, so a little more fuel consumption to bring the averages up. At that point I will bring the power back to 2650 depending on the need to get over a mountain or not. My average cruise speed is 104 KIAS at 2550-2650 rpm. I usually fly at 5500 feet or lower. At higher altitudes, the fuel consumption is better as expected.

Prop pitch is an issue too when you discuss climb as well. My Sen. wooden 64X51 (a cruise prop) allows for about 800' climbs, but then I only get about 2650 rpm during climbs, too. However, My XC burn is about 5 GPH @ a 2650 cruise @ 115 mph indy. Last week, I loaded up to the max and did the 247 miles between KCOU and KLNK @ about 135 mph ground speed level @ 7500. Burned 14 gals in both directions. If I get in a hurry I push it up to 2750 rpm and the burn rate goes to six. Load is a factor. Drop off big brother and all my numbers get better on the way home. So, as the other guy stated, the science is not perfect but the known averages are getting more common. @ 360 hours you will get to know your averages, too.

I have 30 gallon tanks, Jabiru 3300 with the Sensenich carbon fiber ground adjustable prop. Brad has the same engine and prop. Not sure about his tanks.

I just checked and so far my longest flight was on 07-23-09. It was 642 statue miles in 6.5 hours with an average speed of 98.7. I landed with 4 gallons of fuel remaining so I burned about 26 gallons. Fuel burn was 4 gallons per hour and 24.7 statute MPG.

I just ran some analysis on my last climb out of STS at full throttle. The science is a bit weak because I was having some fun but here it is: I remained full throttle for 54 seconds after lift off. In that time my average fuel burn was 9.7 GPH. I gained 791 feet which is 878 per minute. Average RPM was 2,878. Maximum rate of climb was 2,123 (that was the fun part).

Of course to make this meaningful we will need to talk about temperature and elevation and weight etc.

I think your 1,000 ft/min is quite realistic at sea level with on person on board.
