Second Wing

Finally finished with second wing except the wing tip that I hope to get to this week.  Wanted to get done before July 4th but screwed up top rear skin.  Ordered new sheet of aluminum (still thinking could get done in my time line) and the sheet was damaged in shipping.  Re-ordered and got it a few days later.  Now shock and horror I start to think about match drilling all of the holes, weird myself out, so I put it off until after the forth so I don't have to rush.  Now (as we know how this…

Wing Ribs Complete

Yesterday I finished the last of the wing ribs. All nose, rear, root and flaperon ribs are done and I have cut material to form flaperon spars, rear wing channels and cut material for the wing spars.

Question, I wanted to post this as a status as many do but I don't know how.  Can anyone teach an old dog a new trick --thanks.

New Year, New Start

After taking a several month break (mostly to gather monies for materials to go forward) I’m back.  I have resolved my immediate problem of having to wait to purchase materials at least to carry me through the airframe stage.  That said, in the process of getting my act together I purchased a set of plans for the Ch 750.

Yeah I know, but these STOL guys just seem to be having so much fun.   I will be placing an order for materials this week to scratch build my 750.  Hope to be able…

Back at it - Wing tip

I haven't been able to work on my project in better than 3 months, life sometimes life just gets in the way.  I gave up trying to make a plug to mold to my wing tip with no success (some things I guess I just can't do).   I purchased the tip from Zenith and cut it down to use only the forward portion and I am very pleased with the fit.  I was a little worried that being plans built skins I may have some major working to do but I didn't.

Wing progress again

Mr. Groundhog came out a day early here and brought me some aluminum today so I started cutting my first bottom and nose skin. Post soon I hope.

Fuel tanks

Finished sealing and riveting fuel tanks yesterday. Now let cure and then test.

Fuel tanks

Borrowed a bead roller and rolled the beads in my fuel tank(s) skins. Little nervous as screwing up could ruin a lot of material. Beads came out great and I even put in an extra in the center top and bottom of the tanks. Shouldn't have worried.

Spars complete

Just finished riveting the left wing spar, all spars now complete (finally). Hopefully after next week I can start on a wing skeleton.

Finished riveting right wing spar

When I built the center spar I primed it with Zinc Phosphate but I was not real thrilled with the primer AND it was pretty expensive.  I‘m sure that I applied it too heavy but it’s still not cheap.  On this spar I went back to using Cortec thinned with water as I did with the tail sections.  Not wanting to start a high wing vs. low wing type argument but I will stick with the Cortec from now on, I am much happier with it.  I riveted this spar completely with the “C” frame riveter I…

Finally completed center spar

Friday, I finally finished the center spar after making every mistake known to man and Zenith. But hey, I only made every piece in it twice and a couple three times. Today, I started sanding and prepping pieces of one wing spar for final assembly and riveting.

I've advanced back to January

Thanks to my screwing up bad enough that I had to remake one wing spar and the center spar, and with life in general getting in the way of my working on my plane, I am now back to where I was the end of January.  I just completed making the new spars (match drilled and reamed to 1/4" only until spars are riveted together).  I did not re-use any pieces of the original spars because everything was drilled to final size when I screwed up and I did not want to chance trying to match drill some…

Mated rear ribs to spars

Located rib locations and drilled spars. Had to remake one rib out of this set (#2) all in all I'm happy with that. Time now to clean, sand, prime & finish spars.

Spars

Rough construction of wing and center spars complete and drilled to size. Will drill close to size of wing attach bolt holes then pull all 3 spars apart, sand, deburr, polish prime and rivet. Will drill wing attach holes to final size and ream after riveting.

Left wing spar

All pieces cut and fit, drilled to pilot size. Good thing I already know how to drink or I'ld have to learn after working on center and win spars...

Next phase

I have used up all of the .016 through .040 material I had on hand making miscellaneous parts, (270 parts so far).  I laughingly call this method my plans built quick build kit figuring at the rate I am going in 3-5 years I'll would have enough parts to quick build an airframe.

I will be ordering the material for wing and center spars next week.  Here are a couple

Elevator not Stabilizer

See what I mean about mistakes, meant elevator not stabilizer in both the blog and pic.  Guess I learned this time to proof before post???

Completed the Stabilzer

I finished the stabilizer yesterday, I ended up changing both the hinges to a 2" open because I was not happy with the rivet to edge spacing.  I made many of the parts twice and if I were paying myself minimum wage I am sure that I would be in the price range of a Bonanza.  With 99.9% of the build ahead of me can anyone say Gulfstream?

It sure is fun and I am learning from every mistake I make!
