EAA One Week Wonder on Tour in Central Florida: March 2015

Here's a summary of my three days with the EAA One Week Wonder airplane in central Florida earlier this week.

On Wednesday, we flew by the shortest paved runway (a nice R/C field, just a few hundred feet long) and later that night I had the chance to fly over the longest runway I'd ever seen (NASA's shuttle landing runway at Kennedy Space Center, three miles long!).…

STOL CH 750 Factory Demo #1 ...after the storm

Here's an update on our original STOL CH 750 Factory Demonstrator airplane, N750ZZ.  This is the airplane that was flipped over in the Sun'n Fun "tornado" last year.

First, let's review briefly:  This was the Zenith booth right after the tornado passed through at Sun'n Fun 2011 on March 31.  Even though this looks like a war zone, we thank God that no one was physically injured:…

Door Air Deflectors for the STOL CH 750

Getting ready for summer (and the hot muggy weather that we've come to expect in central Missouri), we decided to remove the doors of our STOL CH 750 once again.

We decided to add air deflectors along the front of the cabin / door frame to maximize comfort with the doors off.  Air (or wind) deflectors are common on European cars - where many folks drive around with their windows open (many cars there are not equipped…

New STOL CH 750 features introduced at Sun'n Fun

Bigger and Better Zenith STOL:

We've made the popular Zenith STOL CH 750 light sport utility kit aircraft even bigger and better!

The STOL CH 750 cabin, which by all measures is already very roomy for a light aircraft, has been increased in size by raising the cabin height…

Sebring 2012: It was all about the trip!

Even though the 2012 Sebring U.S. Sport Aviation Expo (January 19 -22, 2012) event ended over a week ago, I only just made it back home from the trip this past Friday (and I didn't spend the week on the beach).  Following is a brief summary of the trip as well as some commentary on the planes and cross-country flying:…

Flying at Lake Tahoe

Last month, Roger, my brother Mat and I visited Buzzy Devoll of Buzzair Flight Academy located Carson City, Navada.  Buzzy and his wife, Aumie, operate the full-service flight school with a nice new Zodiac CH 601 XL-B S-LSA trainer which is available for flight training, check-rides, and aircraft rental for flying in the scenic area around Lake Tahoe.…

STOL CH 750: Dual Control Sticks

Frank Tompson recently installed the dual control stick option kit in his STOL CH 750:

We were a little concerned about cabin access (getting in and out of the airplane) with the dual sticks but it appears not to be a problem. Here's a schematic of the system:

The…

FAA's NKET visits the Zenith factory

Earlier this week we were treated by a two day visit by the FAA's newly created National Kit Evaluation Team (NKET) to evaluate and determine that the STOL CH 750 kit, as produced by Zenith, meets the intent of the "51% rule" and to allow an amateur-builder to register the plane as an "amateur-built - Experimental" aircraft (meeting the "major portion" requirement of Title 14, Code of Federal Regulations part 21, Certification Procedures for… Continue

STOL CH 750 x 2

This was the ramp in front of the Zenith factory earlier today: two burgundy and gray light aircraft visited today:

The high wing is Mike Schlichtman's STOL CH 750 and the other is Randy Schlitter's Rans S-19 LSA.

Mike's nice STOL CH 750 is nearly identical to our factory demo version - both are powered by the six cylinder Jabiru 3300… Continue

Testing larger "bushwheel" tires on the STOL CH 750

Those of you who have visited the Zenith factory lately have noticed the larger bald tires on our STOL CH 750 demonstrator. We've been testing these "off airport" tires this past month and are quite pleased with the results.

These affordable (non aviation) ATV tires are smooth and treadless (21x12-8) measuring about 21-inches tall. Mounted on an 8-inch Matco wheel, these larger tires raise the height… Continue
