Yes, you will need to get an approbation from Zenair if your plane is registered as UL ...
If registered as amateur built then you will have to contact the MDRA and they will be able to tell you the steps involved for their approbation...

To upgrade, or fly it as it is, is the big question. I flew it 'as is' for a while, then I realized that I would want more fuel in wing tanks, etc...., and decided to start a rebuild.
Now, I stop wing re-build until satisfied with the welding of the expanded tanks. There is alway some new skill or lesson to learn.
