Review of the New Viking Gearbox at 15 hours

Started Oct 11 0 Replies

At about 45 hours I installed the upgraded gearbox in my Viking 130 powered Zenith 750 Cruzer. Jan had told me that the new gearbox would run cooler and had a new bearing to handle the turbo power…Continue

How often do you have to add oil?

As on any plane I check the oil before each flight and make sure it is in range, when it gets near the bottom end of the range add enough to bring it near the top. The question is how many hour are…Continue

Review of the New Viking Gearbox at 15 hours

At about 45 hours I installed the upgraded gearbox in my Viking 130 powered Zenith 750 Cruzer. Jan had told me that the new gearbox would run cooler and had a new bearing to handle the turbo power levels, and since I was contemplating getting a constant speed prop, I thought the extra headroom would be worth the investment since constant speed props run higher RPMS.I have about 15 hours on the new gearbox and I have to tell you I am surprised how cool in runs, how much cleaner the new setup is…See More

Making of a dual purpose Cruzer. STOL and Speed in one aircraft (but not at the same time)

While I built a Cruzer for speed, if Fast was all I was looking for a Sling TSI would have made a better build. I also wanted a part-time bush plane for the times I want to explore the Northwest off the beaten path. I also wanted to be able to change over quickly so that when I needed to go on a long cross country the change over time could be amortized in time and fuel cost savings for the trip. I am hoping for about a one hour change over to move from one configuration to the other. So how do…See More

How often do you have to add oil?

As on any plane I check the oil before each flight and make sure it is in range, when it gets near the bottom end of the range add enough to bring it near the top. The question is how many hour are you expected to go between having to add a quart? In cars I often never have to between oil changes, but what do folks see in real-world use of the car engine in airplane use?I am sure how much you push it will influence it. Has anyone kept track or noticed? If I go on a long cross country, how much…See More

Ducting on my Viking 130

While I was not experiencing overheating early on in my flight testing, we got a really bad run of hot weather in Seattle, and I was getting elevated temperatures after initial takeoff and climb to pattern altitude and was pushing low 220's. Even trying slow lower power climbs it was not possible to reduce th temps to below 218, so I knew I had to deal with modifications to my cooling.I started by replacing the supplied 1/4 by 20 100mm long rods with some longer ones and opening up about 6-7…See More

Got my Airworthiness Certificate!

You can see my blog post for more details, but N19JF, a Viking powered Zenith CH-750 Cruzer with about 18 months and 968 hours of my sweat, (literally) blood and tears, as well a few hundred hours from my son Halden and friends John and Diego, is now certified airworthy!Only 28 hours of that was actually in airplane construction, the other 940 hours was removing the @#^$&#$!@ part number stickers! Thanks Roger…See More

Weight and Balance for 750 Cuzer w/ Viking 130

I am getting ready for DAR and I went on the scales for the first time today. I drained the fuel in climb attitude and put it on the scales. The fuel flow test using Viking mini-header tanks was 26.5 GPH on the Pilots side, and 25.9 on the passenger side tank. Well above a safety margin over maximum takeoff flow rate.I had seen jan's post about the 750 where they replaced a IO200 with a Viking 130 with a W&B of 857. I was hoping to come in somewhere around there.Well, not so much. I have…See More

Does your Zenith 750 Center Y Stick have play in it?

When I move from left to right, there is some slop before the torque tube will move on the roll axis?It seems like the AN3-17A bolt has play inside the C75C2-8 part.Is this normal? how do you deal with this in flight. I don't know how you fly tiny with that much slop before the pressure effects it. Does the constant tend for a "Heavy wing" cause this to always have pressure in one direction?Does anyone else notice this?ThanksJonathan…See More

Started my Viking 130 Engine for the first time today!

Got the fuel finally plumbed and the coolant filled, started and ran after cranking a bit to purge the air. With the lowest idle setting it was still running at 2200+ without the prop on. What should the idle be at minimum throttle? Also the exhaust headers paint was smoking, is this a break in thing?See More

When my family outgrew a Cessna P210, my mission for flying changed. I got plans for an RV-8, but built and observatory instead. I took a number of years off flying full sized airplanes and build a number of scale and aerobatic R/C aircraft, may of my own design. Now that my son is 16 I wanted to finally check off building a airplane from my bucket list.
