Taildragger CG

Posted on October 1, 2011 at 2:57pm 0 Comments

I'm building a CH650 with the taildragger option.  Can I expect the empty CG to be more forward, aft or the same compared to a comparable equipped nosewheel CH601/650?

I can probably calculate the difference if I had accurate weight numbers for the nosewheel assembly.  I would assume the same weight for the mains, just a different moment arm.

Any info will be greatly appreciated!

Shipping issues

Posted on June 4, 2011 at 3:33pm 5 Comments

My fuselage and finishing kits arrived yesterday by truck in a large crate.  I talked to the shipping company that morning and asked if I needed anything at my end to offload the crate.  They said the driver would have everything that's needed.  Wrong!

The driver's first question when he arrived was "do you have a forklift?".  Because the crate was 10+ feet long, his pallet jack would only lift one end and he didn't think he'd be able to turn it to get it on the power lift on…

Inspect removed rivets

Posted on December 4, 2009 at 1:59pm 5 Comments

The procedure I use to remove the AD-6 rivets from the spar for the upgrade is to first drill through the head with a 5/32 drill, shear the head off with a chisel, and then drill about 1/4" into the rivet with a 1/8" drill. I then use a 1/8" punch with an air hammer and push the rivet out.

The last thing I do is inspect the rivet to make sure that the drilling operation didn't go beyond the circumference of the rivet resulting in an enlarged hole in the spar. I'm happy to report that… Continue

Dale,
Yes, the Bellcrank support is my attempt at finding a simple solution.
A triangle seemed strong and light and the rib mount is a replica of that at the bellcrank.

Our hangar mates are also building a 650. Their kit was delivered with different side skins that are longer. They had to trim some off behind the rear spar. We also have some problems with the seat/spar access panels are too long. We have cut them and rebent to fit the arm rest panels.
I think we all are having some issues in the forward area. Zenith has offered a new spar and skins but we do not think we will excercise this option. We can post some pictures Sunday of our modifications if you wish.

Where are you at in the assembly process. We are having issues with the forward skins and center spar and seat back?
