There's a thrust bearing at the lower end to allow the shock to turn without any friction in regards to the spring. See disassembly pics...

Yes, it's an AFCO shock.  We opted for the steel one for cost, weight would be slightly lighter with an aluminimum bodied shock.  We're about 6 pounds on the conversion, but need to subtract the weight of the bungee cord...
