Between the bolt heads, the wrapped/twisted wire should be straight as an arrow and taunt too. If it appears loose to you, then you have one or two extra wraps that are not needed. Remove a couple wraps an you will be able to taunt the wire with your pulling till it sings. On military equipment, we were not allowed to remove wraps. That wire would now be considered junk an removed and started over. A slight rough measurement of the wire length before you insert it will assure you don't have to many wraps.   Many people enjoy doing safeties greatly, there very rewarding.

Thanks for the comment. I did the other one the way you described and will go back and redo this one. Next question... How tight does the twisted section in between the bolts need to be. The reason I ask is that I pulled the wire through the second bolt head as tightly as I could but the wire still seems just a hair loose in between.

Nice, both bolts are in positive safety,  But... pigtail on bottom bolt is incorrect. Wire enters bottom bolt head, the pigtail is started at rear of bolt head or as you look at this picture the right side of the bolt. not in the same location as the entering wire. Pigtails are 1" in length and folded in half when done.

does this look right? There isn't a whole lot on the plane that needs to be safety wired, and I'm learning as I go...
