I had a the ground wire from the B&C crowbar melt today with a little smoke on start up. I rewired the crowbar from ground to the master switch and it is working ok. Is anyone using the AVC1 advanced voltage controller to replace the voltage regulator and crowbar ? My electric system has been pretty reliable for over 700 hrs however  this happened on a cross country and wound up in Wichitafor 2 days. Hoping to get back in the air tomorrow.

It seems to me that the crowbar is a safety device to prevent an over voltage condition if the VR fails.  I have a suspicion that your crowbar is toast and I think you may be better off with it completely disconnected.

Luckly It wasn’t toasted. The wire going to ground was. I tried running it without the crowbar, no tach or alternator. I replaced the wires from crowbar to ground and the master switch. It works, I flew it home a little over 6 hours but I will replace it. After I landed at home there was oil all over the bottom of the plane, broken thru bolt #5 cyl. Most expensive trip I’ve ever had

The crowbar should be opening a fuse or circuit breaker, not smoking a ground wire. I'd check the wiring of that circuit.

Bob your absolutely correct

I'm late to the party, but I stumbled across the AVC1 while looking over various B&C offerings.   I note it is not listed as compatible with the Jab alternator.  The Technical Manual states  "Alternator Stator winding overheats when pushed too hard (incompatible with shunt-type regulator)."

I inquired further and B and C indicated at some point they would like to make a Jab compatible variant, but there are other higher priority projects that they are focusing on at the moment.

One of the reasons my progress is so slow is I spend too much time reading about all the amazing aviation goodies out there ...

Focusing on avionics installation now ...
