Hi Richard, do you have any pictures you could share of the LED tail light installation? Looking at adding a uAvionix tail beacon to my 750 super duty.

Thanks,

Rudder-mounted tail-lights are indeed less popular now, but for those who still want one, Zenair offers this simple-to-install vacuum-molded tail-light fairing (P/N RUD-NAV):

I did it on my 650 rudder after the rudder was complete. I purchased the LED tail light from Zenith with the thermoformed fairing. The hole you cut in the trailing edge of the rudder is large and I had no problem feeding the wire through the hole on the leading edge and hooking up the light. Took less than an hour.

Seems to me that rudder tail lights are becoming less popular - most of the wingtip LED nav/strobes also have a rear-facing white position light that serves the same purpose as the rudder light. I've used Aveo's "Powerburst" LED nav/strobe/rear position light for 6+ years and they work great.

I've used Aveo's "Powerburst" LED nav/strobe/rear position light for 6+ years and they work great.

My 750's Ed.1 fiberglass wingtips have a slight curvature in the mounting area, so I fabricated a flat aluminum mounting plate (clear coated) with a rubber gasket underneath to conform to the curvature. The mounting plate also doubles as a reflector to further enhance the strobe's flash:

I later beta-tested a pre-production skyBeacon ADSB which needed to be mounted forward of the wing to clearly receive the transponder squawk data (the current production model uses a different reception method and probably would work fine mounted directly on the wingtip). So, I incorporated the Powerburst's mounting plate into a custom mount I made for the skyBeacon and this has worked well:

The current production skyBeacon also incorporates a strobe, so this might be a consideration if you're considering ADSB-out. However, I don't think it has a rear position light. They do, however, make the "tailBeacon" ADSB-out for mounting on the rudder that does incorporate a rear position light:
