Here is the elevator trim tab, and you see it's connected with a clevis pin. Originally I had the split pin facing the other direction, and was worried that as the trim tab went down that the pin may get caught against the edge of the elevator and get pushed out.
Right now it seems like a non-issue since it's facing the other way, but what if it works its way around?
1. Widen the hole so that cannot reasonably happen.
2. Tape the pin to the rod
3. Use safety wire instead of split pin
Has anyone put any thought into this or have any experience? Is this a legitimate concern?
That is or should be a cotter pin (split pin as you call it) that goes through the clevis pin hole. The cotter pin should be installed where both of the legs of the split go through the hole in the clevis pin. The legs are then bent back around each side of the clevis pin so that the cotter pin cannot come out.
I see now, thank you! I knew I was doing something wrong, and clearly haven't worked with anything utilizing cotter pins before.
