Looks like the distributor gear on many Slick Magnetos needs to be replaced.  This affects mine...check your serial numbers...

wow Don we could easily go into the SB vs. AD debate regarding FAR pt 91 Maint.

A&P types play that too often, but thanks I'm checking my numbers later at the hangar

wouldn't be odd if this and the recall of the c-162 composite props are related. That supposedly involved Slick mags on the O-200D destructing when use with lightweight specd prop. That's why I got Catto, only O-200D prop with engine combo in FAA docs.

Interesting you say that. I have a Sensenich 2-EK Ground Adjustable composite prop I had on a plane w a Lycoming O235-L2C...great prop. There is a service bulletin on that prop when used with Slick Mags...supposedly a bad harmonic, very little evidence, but nevertheless that's the case. Still plenty of Cub flyers and others flying that prop w Slick Mags (of course their choice). Personally I couldn't do it...the worm in the back of my head would get the better of me:)

Probably going to change at least one of these out for an Emag. Pisses me off w the Slicks at $1400 each w/o a core...could have gone the Emag route from the start.

looks like mine should at least be inspected internally for copper vs. monel. Don't think I'll worry about this one yet

Whew! Affected serial numbers for the 4 cyl mags are 08090001 through 16071072. My mags are 07121293 and 07121294 and only have 100 hours on them, so it's highly unlikely they have the bad distributor gear.

I called the engine shop that rebuilt my Lycoming, thankfully he's only about 40 minutes from KZPH (he's at KSEF)
They'll pull the mags and send them back to champion who will upgrade the affected rotors for free and "promise" a five day turn around, so except for the avgas to get they're I'll only have to pay the shop rate to pull the mags, then reinstall and set timing...
All in all-it could be much worse
