Zenith Aircraft Builders and Flyers

Build It! Fly It! The Companion Website to the Zenair Newsletter

To those who have attended a Rudder Workshop, when did you attend, and how is your project progressing?

My wife & I attended a Rudder workshop in Mexico, MO in November 2006. Today my XL is on it's gear, engine (Corvair) is mostly complete, wings & tail are done.

We found that the Rudder Workshop was a great way to get started, and we enjoyed meeting the people at Zenith, as well as the other builders.

Great topic idea.... When posting a message it's best to attach a file directly as part of your message (using the "Add an image" link) rather that attaching the file ("Upload a file..."). Tim Garrett started a photo album called Rudders to showcase the proud new parents of new rudders. There are even a pair of twins!

We've been hosting monthly rudder workshops at Zenith since 1992 (we haven't kept track of all the alumni!) and we continue to enjoy the workshops and meeting with new builders.

Patrick,

I attended the September, 2006 rudder workshop in Mexico, MO. I was smitten by the experience and drove home with the rest of the tail kit in my car. My XL flew 22 months later in July 2008. You are getting close, good luck!

Hi Dave.
Was at the same rudder workshop in September 2006. Started my CH801 at the factory. Completed July 2008 in South africa!

Hello,

My name is Taylor Ogden. My dad, Jack Ogden and I attended the rudder class the first week of June in 2004 and picked up our full kit and drove it back to Idaho. They told us we got the first full kit delivered with the large horizontal stab/elevator.

Rick Potter (also a member of the online group) was at the workshop and helped us build our rudder to see what it was like. He had so much fun he bought a kit as well and it sounds like he's about as far as we are in the process.

Currently we've got the airframe about done and need to finalize our firewall forward choice so we can get it making it's own airplane noises. (and the other 85% that is left!)

Attached is our success pic taken in Mexico!

Over the years, dad's talked to several people at the plant and everyone's been a big help. "Hi Roger!" from both of us!

I attended the November 2005 rudder workshop at Quality Sport Planes in Cloverdale, CA.

I had so much fun and learned so much building it I ordered my kit on Sunday after the last rivet was popped. It was the first one sold by QSP. I also later got to meet Chris Heintz at QSP who was kind to watch over my shoulder on a few occasions. We talked a great deal about engines and everything. I think he got a kick out of a guy like me who had absolutely no prior engineering or building experience whatsoever. He and Michael are patient teachers!

I can't say enough about Michael Heintz, Doug Dugger and Lori Dugger at QSP for all of their help and support. They are really great people. Just like all the Zenith owners and builders I have met. Not a bad one in the bunch!

My brother Alan and his wife Nathalie and I attended the rudder workshop at Quality Sport Planes in Cloverdale California on February 23rd, 2007. We built two 601XLs. They were both flying by June of that year. Needless to say we had lots of help from the crew at QSP. You can read the story here.

I learned about Quality Sport Planes and the Zodiac when one sunny day I stumbled across an engine workshop at QSP. At the workstop Jim McCormick of Jabiru Pacific was installing a Jabiru 3300 engine on Brad's airplane. I was hooked.

I did mine this past December. The tail kit is sitting in my workshop but I don't have electricity in there yet. Getting an electrician around here is not a fast process, probably due to tons of damage by storms that went through here recently. I'm about to finance the remainder of the entire aircraft through NAFCO, including engine and avionics, so I may actually have all of the parts in my workshop right about the time the electricity goes in.

I attended in September or October of 2002. And I'll do you one better. I firmly beleive that that attending one of the workshops is by far the smartest thing a prespective Zenith builder can do.

When I went I had never seen a 601 in person and I went with two questions in my mind. Had either been a no I would have walked away from the project. First, does the 601 fly like a plane or an ultralight? I wanted a plane and was very happy. Second, can I learn the skills needed to build the thing? The workshop answered that as well.

My wife and I attended the October 2009 workshop. We built the rudder for our CH 750, ordered the plans and the tool kit. The horizontal stabilizer is next!

I attended the February 17th 2005 rudder workshop and brought the rest of my 701 home then. Wings, rudder, elevator, horizontal stab built then upgraded, trim added. Just started fuselage. Trying to decide between Rotax 912 and Jabiru 2200.Five years in a two year project but enjoying the whole process. Joel Sansing N701DK

My wife and I attended the rudder workshop Oct. 2007 and brought home the tail kit. Unfortunately the only way to get it in the car was across the passenger side front and back seats. Which put my wife in the back seat all the way home to South Carolina. You can imagine how much I wanted to start building my Zodiac after listening to 15 hours of grumbling from the back seat!
