I realize I'm a little late with this reply, but I just recently joined this group. I used glareshield trim from Cleveland Aircraft Tool on my Sonex and plan to use it on my 701. Its easy to install and gives a nice finished look.

Aaron - Had another idea for your application - you could simply put a suitably-thick rubber edging material over the metal edge and then push the larger rubber bulb molding's grippers over that. Even easier to do than multiple strips of tape!

The rubber bulb edging not only has the rubber bulb for protection, but it is held by a rather thick edging material, so you get double-protection. If you want something substantial with a rubber bulb for added protection like Zenith uses (and I used) but have a thin painted metal edge and no fabric/vinyl cover, you could wrap a few layers of a thick tape like Gorilla tape over the edge to build it up and to give the edging a grip.

Thats a good idea to wrap the cover around the edge & cover the bottom too. Will give the molding claws more to hold onto also.

My cover is painted only.

The only molding that was close in inside width I found is ACS 05-01400 its 1/32 gap.

Ordered some but its very thin. Only about the thickness of a couple layers of electrical tape. So not what is required.

Arron,

I used a rubber/vynly edge trim that I got from J C Whithey (aircraft supply). It was U shaped, black and has a molded metal insert that maintains tension. The only other thing I need to do is go back and make a re-enforcement piece to go under the dash panel because the original isn't strong enough. I laso used the stuff to edge the wing root to top of cabin and thwe cutouts on the horrizontal stab. As far as weathering - I hung a piece out side for about a year…

I didn't use rubber. I took a piece of aluminum fuel line and split it with a dremmel tool to make a round edge. It's held in place by little clips that made.

I made my own glareshield cover and tried to get the rubber bulb molding from Zenith, but they said you cannot order it separately from the upholstery kit. McMaster-Carr sells the identical molding, however, here. I can't remember the exact one I ordered, but the grip size will depend on whether you're just painting vs. covering the glareshield with a trim material. Here's a tip: if you cover the lip with a material such as black vinyl, leave enough excess to wrap over the edge of the metal. That way, the molding grip will hold the material very securely and not just push it back off the lip.
